Nixie Clock

I guess it’s time for my quarterly post.  It’s hard to find time to make updates anymore.  What little free time I have away from work is spent gaming or on my two newest hobbies, electronics and woodworking.

A little over a year ago I started working on a new project that required the use of a microcontroller.  Looking for something easier to use than the 68HC12 I messed with in college, I found the Arduino.  Of course I’m always out to save a buck, so rather than buy an Arduino board I decided to make my own based on various schematics available on the interwebs.

That initial project is sitting unfinished in my closet while I wait for warmer weather.  In the meantime I’ve been honing my PCB etching skills by working on a few others.  The first is a Nixie tube clock using my Arduino clone and the ArduiNix shield.

I used IN-12B tubes for the numbers and INS-1 neons for the dots.  AM and PM are designated by IN-15B and IN-15A tubes.  Two rotary switches are used to set the time, one for hours and one for minutes.  My next project, which I hope to have finished in a couple weeks, will involve tubes of a different sort.

52. Take up carpentry as a hobby.

I’ve been busy over the last 3 or 4 months. Lots of projects going on. The biggest was building a playhouse for my niece.

I got a table saw for my birthday which came in very handy.  I think I did enough carpentry here to cross this off my list.

New Theme

The more I looked at the old theme, the more I hated it. I’ve been working on this one for a couple months. It was modeled after B movie posters of the 50s and 60s. I think it could still use a little more tweaking.

Ready to splice

I got a new toy over the weekend.

It’s a replica EVE Hypo from Bioshock.  I was disappointed after first pulling it out of the box.  The needle fell off and the blue LED inside didn’t light up.   But after gluing the needle back on and wiping some corrosion off the batteries it looks and works great.

Xmas Wishlist 2009

Three shopping days left until Christmas. That should be plenty of time for you to pick me up one of the following items:

Nike 2015 Hyperdunks – A.K.A. Air McFlys. This was supposed to be on last year’s list, but I forgot about it.

Hattori Hanzo Sword – This one might be a little hard to get. I’ve heard he doesn’t make swords anymore.

Steve Zissou Pinball Machine – As seen onboard the Belafonte.

Spykee Wi-Fi Spy Bot – Slap a laser on this thing and it would be like something out of Chopping Mall.

GoDogGo- My dog will fetch a ball until she passes out. I can’t keep up with her. Something like this could save me from a possible rotator cuff surgery.

Injury Report

Once again, I’ve managed to fall down the stairs.  These stairs are  death trap.  This time I fell backwards catching my lower back and both elbows on the edge of a step.  Then I slid about half way down the stairs, scraping my arms up in the process.  I actually landed on the step so hard that I moved it.  In the photo below you can see the outline of where the step used to be.

I spent the rest of the day with an ice pack on my left elbow to keep the swelling down.

This also gives me the opportunity to point out the widget I made over in the right column.  It keeps a running tally of days since my last injury.
